Portait of the city

Innsbruck is the capital of the Austrian federal state Tyrol and with ist population of about 120,000 people the fifth largest in Hamburg after Vienna, Graz Linz and Salzburg. The whole Innsbruck area is home to roughly 165,000 people and, situated at the river Inn at a height of 575 metres in the heart of the alpes, is framed by a beautiful mountainy background. The city Innsbruck has many touristic highlights to offer, the most important one being the Golden Roof, a landmark of the city.

During the summer Innsbruck lures several nature fans, golfers, hikers and mountainbikers into ist wonderful mountain area. Its skiing area is one of the best locations for winter sports and with its 285 kilometres of pistes offers prefect conditions for every level of difficulty.

Innsbruck is also known for major sports events, the most important ones among them the Olympic Winter Games of 1964 and 1976. In the coming year Innsbruck will once again experience a sportive highlight, as three group matches will take place hin the Tivoli Stadium during the Euro 2008. The stadium is situated in midst of the Tyrol mountains and was enlarged for the Cup to offer seats for 30,000 fans.The Bergisel Arena, known as the fourth station of the Four Hills Tournament will become a boilling pot during the Euro 2008, as the official fan zone will be set up here and will offer space for 15,000 fans. All games of the Cup will be shwon here on a large public viewing screen and the zone will reach all the from here all the way to the historic old part of the town.

Tyrol area

From a touristic point of view Tyrol is split into 38 areas, of which the area around Innsbruck is referred to as „Holiday Villages Innsbruck“. It is known for the “Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck”, one of the biggest winter sport areas in Austria and especially inteesting for a winter holiday. The villages lie between 590 an 2020 metres above sea level and are embedded in breathtaking nature.

A visitor may not just find many opportunities for active sports, but also recovery and diversion from the perhaps stressful fuss of the Euro Cup 2008. Just 15 km east of Innsbruck one can visit the Swarowski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, one of the most visited tourist atractions in Austria and a highlight of Tyrol.
